The Most "Powerful Judicial Branch in the World"
There are currently 9 justices that serve on the court, but over 100 justices have served in the history of the court. Once each justice is appointed, they must be confirmed by the senate and can serve for life. It is the job of each justice to ensure they are "safeguarding liberty, preserving the union, and upholding the rule of the law."
The Supreme Court receives over 7,000 petitions to review per year and accepts on average about 100 per year. Petitions can arrive from anyone from prisoners who feel they were wrongly convicted to the President of the United States pushing his or her own agenda. When the justices hear the court, it is in public, but their decision is then made days later in private. Justices only get to deal with problems that come to them at their level; they do not seek out problems and attempt to fix them. Once a decision is finalized on a trial, a justice begins drafting an opinion statement stating the outcome and the reasoning behind it. A final draft is eventually released to the press and can be used as a reference for future cases.
